White jasmine can have a tonic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, diuretic, hypotensive and hemostatic effect. In case of some allergic reactions, it contributes to the reverse development of the process.

The rhizome of this plant also has therapeutic properties; it is used to make alcohol tincture. This medicine cures toothache and insomnia. The leaves and stems are used to make a decoction, which should be taken orally for headaches, heart ailments, nervous diseases and other pain of various etiologies.

The beneficial properties of white nettle are especially pronounced when using freshly squeezed juice from this plant. It is a good sedative for hysteria, insomnia and nervous agitation. For diseases such as furunculosis, eczema, rash, scrofula, skin ulcers, it is taken not only internally, but also used as an external remedy.

White nettle is used to make compresses to treat wounds and burns, itchy rashes and cramps. Also, its decoction is an excellent remedy for treating a sore throat or a common cold - they just need to gargle several times a day. Baths with the addition of infusion are excellent for hemorrhoids.

About preparation, drying

Before using medicines, you need to properly prepare the plant material - collect it in a certain way and dry it. For therapeutic purposes, usually only flowers are used; only white and fully blossomed corollas should be collected, tearing off the stamens attached directly to the stem.

Drying is carried out at temperatures up to 25C; it is best to arrange the flowers in the shade, distributing them in a thin layer, about one or two centimeters. After proper processing, the raw material turns yellowish-whitish in color, its taste is sweetish and mixed with some mucus. Processed raw materials are usually exported to different countries. Most often, white nettle harvesting occurs in the forest-steppe region in Ukraine and the Baltic states.

Many gardeners call coleus the ideal flower, as it combines the extraordinary beauty of leaves, endurance and ease of care at home. It can be grown both in an apartment, as a perennial plant, and in the garden, as an annual plant. The shape of its leaves, as can be seen in the photo, is similar to nettles, which is why it is also popularly called “Indoor nettle”.

Coleus belongs to the Lamiaceae or Lamiaceae family. Cultivated varieties are derived from wild species native to tropical areas of Asia and Africa. In European countries, coleus began to be grown in the 19th century, where it was brought from the island of Java. Coleus appeared on the territory of Russia even later, mainly the Blume and Verschaffelt varieties. The photo shows the variety of varieties and types of coleus.

This is a spectacular, fast-growing and very unpretentious flower to care for at home. The coleus houseplant amazes with the variety of colors and patterns of its leaves. It can have red, burgundy, purple, bright green and other shades of foliage. The velvet leaves of coleus have an exotic appearance thanks to unique patterns with numerous stains, dots, and stripes. The colorful leaves of coleus produce phytoncides that destroy pathogenic bacteria and improve the freshness of indoor air.

Coleus is also sometimes called "poor man's croton." Sometimes it even surpasses croton in the colorfulness of its leaves, although it costs much less. And one more advantage - coleus does not require special care, not to mention capricious.

This is how coleus blooms

Coleus is a flowering plant, but its small bluish or white flowers are not particularly beautiful or decorative. The photo on the left shows how coleus blooms. In addition, the formation of flowers takes a lot of energy and nutrients from the plant, and therefore the leaves become small. That's why it is better to remove the buds.

Rules for caring for coleus at home

The main requirement for the appearance of beautiful, brightly colored leaves is good lighting. Lighting has a significant effect on the morphology of coleus. The stronger the lighting, the brighter the colors on the leaves of the plant. But it should be borne in mind that he needs, although bright, slightly diffused light. In intense sun, the leaves may fade and get burned. The best solution would be to place them on windows facing west or east. Coleus is a heat-loving plant; it develops well at 20-25 degrees Celsius, although it can easily tolerate minor temperature changes. The flower does not have a pronounced period of rest; it continues to grow and delight with its splendor even in winter. Pinching will help to develop lush green coleus. First of all, pinch the main stem at a height of 10 cm, and then the grown side branches starting from a length of 4 cm. How to properly pinch coleus is shown in the video:

Watering and humidity

Do not forget that coleus loves abundant watering not only in spring and summer, but also in winter, on a warm, sunny windowsill in a dry room, you need to make sure that the soil in the pot does not dry out. But if coleus is watered abundantly in light and warm conditions, then in cool conditions and darkened rooms, watering is halved. Temporary drought will cause less harm than excess moisture! When a plant wants to drink, its leaves droop. In addition, at high temperatures the flower likes to be sprayed. But you shouldn’t wipe the velvet leaves. In spring and summer, you can feed coleus with fertilizers once every 2-3 weeks, although watering and sunlight are sufficient for the normal development of the plant.

How to propagate coleus

Coleus is propagated in two ways: cuttings and seeds. It is worth taking cuttings of at least 10 cm. They quickly produce roots in ordinary settled water, take root well and grow rapidly.

The cutting has given roots, it’s time to plant it in the ground

You can also root coleus in the ground. To do this, you need to plant the cuttings in moist, loose soil under a film - roots will appear in a week or two.

Also at home, in addition to cuttings, you can try growing coleus from seeds. For amateur gardeners, bright and unpretentious varieties of Bloom, Wizard or Black Dragon are suitable. Any type of coleus must be planted in a large pot. It is better to sow seeds in early March in a mixture of peat and sand, under a film. Not deep, it’s even better not to embed them in the ground, but evenly distribute them over its surface. Gently moisten with a spray bottle. Shoots appear no later than 10-14 days. Open the film briefly every day - the seedlings need to be ventilated! About 2 weeks after germination, the film can be opened for a longer time, and then removed completely. By the first leaves that appear, one can judge the future color of an adult plant. But all the unique characteristics of a variety are not always transmitted through seeds, so it is better to propagate the most beautiful and expensive specimens by cuttings. But with seeds you can get a lot of seedlings at once, because there are usually 20 or more of them in bags. You can sow coleus seeds at other times, but you need to take into account that in winter the seedlings will have to be illuminated from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., otherwise they will stretch out and lose their attractiveness.

Diseases and pests

Coleus gets sick quite rarely, but sometimes it is still susceptible to various diseases.

It happens that the leaves of the plant begin to turn pale and discolored. Most often this happens from a lack of sunlight, but when a young flower that is not accustomed to light comes under direct sunlight, it can get burned; its leaves wither and become faded. Adjust the lighting mode and everything will return to normal.

Coleus got burns

It happens that brown spots appear on the leaves - most likely the air in the room is very dry and frequent spraying of the plant is required. In addition, you can place a container with wet expanded clay or sand near the pot.

Why do coleus leaves fall? It happens that coleus sheds its leaves before autumn. It may be lacking nutrients. Feed the plant with special fertilizers, and in the spring it will grow again.

Sometimes the flower grows very tall. Most often this happens in winter due to lack of sunlight. The shoots become bare, become long and thin, and as a result the plant loses its decorative effect. To preserve coleus in winter, regular pinching of the tops and additional lighting are recommended. In February, it is recommended to cut the coleus into a stump, leaving 5-6 eyes for new growth. If coleus is grown as a perennial, then every 2-3 years it is transplanted into larger pots with good drainage.

It happens that pests appear on coleus. More often it is an aphid or spider mite. The diseased flower must be urgently isolated from the rest and treated with an appropriate insecticide.

We hope our article on caring for and propagating coleus at home was useful to you. If you like low-maintenance, beautiful herbaceous plants, then coleus is definitely for you!
